An FM modulator is one of the best ways to enjoy listening to personal music in the car. A wireless FM modulator is a device that converts the audio from an MP3, smartphone or iPod into RF signals which are then picked up by the car's antenna and played over an unused FM station. Another product, a wired FM modulator, essentially does the same thing except it is a hardwired setup.

The problem is most people don't fully understand the differences between the two products. A lot of people would say that the hardwired setup is the best; that may not be true though.

Wireless options provide the user with less hassle, as there are no cords to mess with. In addition, they provide easy accessibility, instead of hindering the user to one vehicle.

To demonstrate the hassle of wired FM modulators let's consider the following situation. Let's say you decide to install a FM modulator in your automobile, as you want to listen to your iPod rather than commercial radio:

1. You need to pull apart the dash, and then pull out your factory radio, while being careful not to cause any damage to the current setup.

2. Once you've gotten the radio out, you will need to splice the wires making sure that everything connects properly.

3. After everything is set up, you'll need put everything back together so it looks respectable.

4. You'll have to go through the hassle of uninstalling the unit if anything breaks on the modulator or you decide to go with another product.

5. If you plan on selling or leasing a car, then installing a permanent product like a wired FM modulator is probably not the best decision.

6. The modulator will only function in one car and nowhere else.

Since most of these wired FM modulators are installed in hard to reach places, it is very inconvenient to fix or repair them if they break down.

Wireless FM modulators will allow you to avoid all of these hassles; as it is a portable wireless device that requires no tricky installation. Additionally, it provides you with the multiple options for utilization, whether in your automobile or at home.

When shopping around for a wireless FM modulator, it's important to avoid a cheap, low quality modulator. Usually you'll find an abundance of $15 or $20 modulators that look like little toys you would buy for a toddler. These will give you terrible audio quality and considerable interference. But if you know what to look for, you should be able to find a high quality FM modulator that you'll be very happy with.

A quality wireless FM modulator will also include the following benefits:

1. The modulator can be used in virtually any location and with nearly any audio source.

2. It can broadcast on any frequency between 88.1 and 107.9.

3. Volume and mute control, ability to switch from stereo to mono, automatic gain control, preset frequencies that allow you to easily switch between favorites, a microphone plug-in and a manual on/off switch.

4. A wall adapter, USB, cigarette lighter and batteries can all be used to power the device.

5. The capability to broadcast your audio up to 150 feet, just about the maximum allowed by the FCC.

Having the freedom to use the wireless FM modulator in multiple locations make it a tremendously convenient product. With audio quality that rivals a wired FM modulator, there is really no reason to limit yourself to one vehicle. A wireless FM modulator gives you many more possible uses and is a breeze to set up and maintain.
